A656 Grade 60 HSLA steel plate for heavy equipment and structural fabrication
ASTM A656 Grade 60 is a high-strength low-alloy structural steel plate developed for applications requiring improved strength, weight reduction, and good fabrication performance. Produced through controlled rolling and microalloying technology, the material provides a favorable strength-to-weight ratio compared with conventional carbon steels. It is widely used in transportation equipment, construction machinery, material handling systems, and structural fabrication where durability and structural efficiency are important design considerations.
Chemical Composition
A656 Grade 60 is manufactured with controlled carbon levels to maintain weldability while achieving elevated strength through microalloying elements such as niobium, vanadium, and titanium. Manganese contributes to toughness and mechanical stability, while phosphorus and sulfur are restricted to low levels to improve steel cleanliness and fabrication quality. This combination enables the steel to achieve high strength without excessive alloy content.
Mechanical Properties
A656 Grade 60 provides a minimum yield strength of 415 MPa (60 ksi) and a minimum tensile strength of approximately 485 MPa (65 ksi). The steel offers good ductility, reliable toughness, and good forming characteristics, making it suitable for fabricated components subjected to demanding service conditions. Its strength allows designers to reduce structural weight without sacrificing performance.
